I Love ISU Scholarship Campaign- I Love ISU Spotlight

Idaho State University junior Alex Cardona has always wanted to work in the medical field. “When I was a kid, I wanted to have a job where I could help people,” he said. I’ve seen how much nurses can help patients with everything from feeling more comfortable, to overcoming language barriers. When there wasn’t a nurse available to help, I often had to be an interpreter for my family members.”

As a double major in Nursing and Spanish for the Health Professions, Alex has already experienced the positive difference his future profession creates in communities. In March, he went on a service trip to Peru where he had an opportunity to provide free medical services to areas that don’t have access to healthcare. Coming back from this trip, Alex was confident that nursing was how he wanted to make an impact in his surrounding communities. The following week, he would receive his acceptance letter into ISU’s nursing program.

Receiving the I Love ISU Scholarship give Alex the peace of mind he needed. “It definitely took a load off my shoulders knowing I’d have the funds I need to get through college,” he said. “Coming from immigrant parents, I knew it would be up to me to afford my schooling. I still worked through all of college, but the I Love ISU Scholarship gave me so much more freedom to focus on my studies instead of spending all of my extra time working or wondering how I would be able to afford tuition.” With I Love ISU campaign coming up, Alex wants to thank all of the people who donate their time and money to help this scholarship. “Often times, donors give because they know it’s for a good cause, but to college students, your donation is changing our lives completely.”

The I Love ISU Scholarship Campaign is an annual fundraising effort that began 35 years ago as the result of efforts by the Pocatello/Chubbuck Chamber of Commerce and local community leaders to assist local students. Last year 343 scholarships were awarded to Idahoans, including 138 to Bannock County residents. During September, more than 200 volunteers will contact business leaders to request support for the I Love ISU Scholarship. When they call, please consider giving generously in support of student scholarships or make your gift online.
